This page sets out the personal information Josh Car Key Boston gathers, the reason each piece of it is needed, and what happens to it afterwards. It covers both this website and the mobile car key work we carry out across Boston, Massachusetts and the towns around it.

What You Tell Us

The quote request form asks for five things: your name, an email address, the address where the car is standing, a phone number we can reach you on, and what you drive. That last one matters, because a straight replacement and key fob programming are different jobs carrying different prices. Call us instead and the same details are taken down over the phone, usually with the year, make and model, and occasionally the VIN. None of it is collected out of curiosity. Without it we can neither price the work nor send anybody to the right address.

The Ownership Check

No key is cut or programmed until we have established that the car is genuinely yours. In practice the technician asks to see your driver's license alongside a registration, a title or an insurance card. What gets written down is only enough to show the check took place, which normally means the name on the documents, the license number and the vehicle identification number. Your license is not photographed or copied unless you tell us we may, and no pictures of your paperwork are left sitting on a technician's phone.

What We Do With It

Your details are used to price the job, to get a technician to the right place, to carry out the work, to take payment and to keep a service record for the warranty. That record is also what lets us identify your vehicle in minutes if you come back later for a spare. We do not assemble marketing profiles out of it and we do not send promotional messages to people who never asked for them.

Your Details Are Not For Sale

Nothing here is sold, rented or traded to anyone, at any price. It leaves our hands in three situations only: a payment processor sees what it needs in order to take a card payment, our own technicians see what they need in order to finish the job, and the law occasionally requires disclosure, a lawful police request concerning a particular vehicle being the usual example.

What Happens When You Use the Quote Form

Nothing typed into that form is saved on any server of ours. Pressing the send button hands the text to whatever email program is set up on your device, where it sits as a draft until you decide to send it, and from there it travels through your own email provider exactly like any other message you write. Should we ever route the form through an outside form handling service instead, this page will name that service before the switch is made.

Cookies, Tracking and the Typeface

This site sets no cookies, runs no advertising trackers and carries no analytics package recording where you go afterwards. There is one request to an outside server: the typeface is served by Google Fonts, so your browser fetches it from Google and Google sees your IP address in the course of that perfectly ordinary request. Block it if you would rather, because every page still reads correctly in the fallback fonts already installed on your machine.

How Long Records Stay With Us

A completed job leaves a record that we hold for as long as warranty, accounting and tax obligations reasonably demand, which works out in practice at around seven years. Enquiries that never became jobs are thrown out once it is plain the work is not going ahead. Ask us to delete your details sooner than that and we will, unless a law obliges us to keep them.

Keeping It Secure

We take sensible measures to protect what we hold, consistent with the Massachusetts data security rules that apply to any business keeping personal information about residents of the Commonwealth. Only the people who need that information in order to do the work can reach it. No arrangement is flawless, and in the event of a breach touching your personal information, you and the appropriate Massachusetts authorities would be told, as the law requires.

What You Can Ask Us To Do

You are entitled to ask what we hold about you, to have anything inaccurate put right, and to have it erased. You can also tell us to stop contacting you, and that is the end of it. Residents of some states have further rights under their own privacy statutes, and a valid request made under one of those will be honored. A letter, or a call to the number below, is all it takes.

Children

This is a service for people who own cars, and the site is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly gather personal information from anyone under the age of thirteen.

If This Policy Changes

Any change in how we handle these things will appear on this page, with the date at the top moved forward to match. Significant changes will be spelled out here rather than slipped in unannounced.
